What is RUTE?

Critical questions in contemporary biology increasingly require mathematical analyses for their answers; however, there is a shortage of biologists with sufficient training in mathematics and mathematicians with sufficient training in biology to master this interdisciplinary work. The Department of Mathematics and the School of Biological Sciences are cooperating to address this issue at a variety of levels. RUTE is the part of the effort that is aimed for upper division undergraduates. The RUTE program has several interrelated components. Information about these will be added to the site before the end of 2005.

What is the RUTE Scholars program?

The RUTE Scholars program is a structured research program for teams of undergraduate students and faculty mentors. Each team will have two biology or natural resources students and two mathematics students.

We are now accepting applications for a team that will work on a project from January 2006 through May 2007. (See the project description for more details.)

What do I get as a RUTE Scholar?

  1. A structured introduction to research in ecology and mathematical modeling.
  2. A close mentoring relationship with biological science and mathematical science faculty at UNL who are directing the research project.
  3. A 10-week summer field research experience at Cedar Point Biological Station.
  4. A stipend of $3250 for the summer field research experience.
  5. Funds to send you to a professional meeting to present a talk or a poster.
